|Arturo Sosa Abascal, S.J.|
Dear Brothers and Friends,
You may already be aware of this, but I want to share with you personally the news that General Congregation 36 has elected Fr. Arturo Sosa Abascal of the Venezuelan Province as the next Superior General of the Society of Jesus. Most recently, Fr. Sosa has been serving as the delegate of the General for the international houses and works of the Society of Jesus in Rome. More information regarding our new Superior General is available at www.gc36.org and www.midwestjesuits.org
Attached please find his Fr. Sosa’s photo and a copy of the handwritten Decree of Election signed by Fr. James Grummer [Wisconsin Province] who has served as the vicar general during these initial weeks of GC 36.
I had the pleasure of getting to know Fr. Sosa when we lived in the Leonard Neale House Community in Washington during his sabbatical after he finished his term as Provincial of Venezuela. He was kind enough to assist me with the Arrupe Experience that year, serving as a retreat director.
According to the norms outlined in the Constitutions, the electors conclude the election process by reciting a TE DEUM. I invite each member of the Province, either as an individual or as a community, to share in this special prayer of thanksgiving. A copy is attached to this email. I am grateful for the intentions and prayers that I know you will offer for our Fr. Sosa. Please remember that our Society’s custom calls upon each member of the Society to offer Mass for the intention of Fr. General (#304, §1.1 of the Manual for Juridical Practice of the Society of Jesus).
Let us pray in a special way for the guidance of the Holy Spirit upon Fr. Sosa as he begins his tenure as Superior General and for the continued guidance of the Spirit upon all the delegates of General Congregation 36 in the work they must continue to do.
Sincerely in Christ,
John F. Armstrong, S.J.
