Defining the Future

I have confessed to you in the past that my family often says I am a master of the obvious.  There is some truth in what they say because philosophers often spend time wondering and questioning issues or things that most people consider obvious.  So let me start with something that is obvious but often unstated:  What we do here, each day, is important.   It is important to our students and the world. The university mission statement says, “Through teaching, research, creative activities, and service, the faculty, in cooperation with the staff, strives to educate the whole student and to benefit the larger community.”
