Spring 2018 Convocation President's Address

In one sense, I am a rarity. The average tenure of a private university president in the USA is slightly less than seven years. The year I will complete my 14th year as president of Loyola University. And, what a tenure it has been!
As ever one knows as I began my second year, two days after the arrival of one of our largest First Year classes, Hurricane Katrina also arrived and devastated the city and people in it. Many people thought the city of New Orleans would not survive. (Indeed the then Speaker of the US House of Representatives thought the city should be bulldozed.). However, as I have said before, the city did more than survive.
